If you’re thinking about reaching out to Artemis Huron, you might have questions about what we do, who we help, and how it all works. Here’s what you need to know—no judgment, no pressure. Just honest answers so you can decide what’s right for you.
Do I have to stay in the shelter to use other services?
No. You don’t have to live in our emergency shelter to access support from Artemis Huron. Many women connect with us while living in their own homes or somewhere else in the community. You can still use our counselling, safety planning, court support, and other programs without staying in shelter.

Who can call your 24/7 Support Line? Who picks up the phone?
Anyone who is experiencing (or worried they might be experiencing) gender-based violence can call our confidential support line—whether you’re in immediate crisis, need to talk through your options, or are concerned about someone you know.
When you call, you’ll speak directly to a trained Women & Family Advocate from our shelter team. They’ll listen without judgment, help you think through your next steps, and connect you with resources if you want them.
24/7 Support Line: 1-800-265-5506 — day or night, every single day of the year.
Do I have to be planning to leave my relationship to get help?
Absolutely not. We will work with you to mitigate risk, keep you as safe as possible, and plan next steps that feel right for you. You are the expert in your own experience, and we recognize it might not always be safe to leave.
What about my kids?
Your children’s safety and well-being are a top priority.
If you stay in our shelter, we have private family rooms, a playroom, and a secure outdoor space for kids. We also offer counselling and programming for children and youth who have experienced or witnessed gender-based violence, and we can connect you with school support, childcare resources, and other community services.
What does “gender-based violence” mean?
Gender-based violence is any harm or abuse inflicted because of someone’s gender, gender identity, or perceived gender roles. It can be physical, emotional, sexual, psychological, or financial. It can happen in intimate relationships, families, workplaces, or communities.
At Artemis Huron, we support all women—including transgender women, non-binary people, and others on the gender spectrum who identify as women.
Is there a cost for your services?
No. All Artemis Huron services are offered free of charge.
Do I have to be in immediate danger to reach out?
Not at all. Many women contact us when they’re unsure about their relationship, want to understand their options, or need support during a major life change. You don’t have to wait until a crisis to get help.
How do I get started?
It’s as simple as picking up the phone.
Call our 24/7 Support Line at 1-800-265-5506. You’ll be met with compassion, understanding, and zero pressure.
You are not alone. Whether you need immediate safety, emotional support, or a plan for the future, Artemis Huron is here—every step of the way.
