Who We Are

Artemis Huron is a bold, feminist organization committed to education, prevention and support for women and families affected by gender-based violence in Huron County. From the first conversation together, we help women explore their options and plan for their future and next steps. We recognize that gender-based violence does not happen in a vacuum, but rather stems from a culture perpetuating violence against women and children. As such, activism and advocacy are key parts of what we do.

Our Commitment to Inclusivity

At Artemis Huron, the words “woman” and “women” reflect inclusivity and empowerment. We honor and support all individuals who identify as women, providing a safe, affirming space for self-expression and healing.

We are proud to stand with the queer community, including transgender women, non-binary individuals, and others on the gender spectrum who identify as women. We recognize the unique challenges marginalized groups face and are committed to creating an environment that celebrates diversity, respects identities, and ensures safety for everyone seeking our support.

Understanding Gender-Based Violence

Gender-based violence (GBV) refers to harm or abuse inflicted on someone due to their gender, gender identity, or perceived roles. It encompasses physical, emotional, sexual, psychological, and financial abuse, rooted in systemic inequality and harmful societal norms.

We recognize that GBV affects individuals across the gender spectrum, including women, transgender individuals, non-binary people, and members of the queer community. We are committed to addressing these injustices, advocating for change, and providing a safe, supportive space for anyone impacted by GBV.

Mission

We advocate for women’s equality, work to prevent violence, and provide services for women and their children who have experienced abuse and/or violence.

Vision

A world free from abuse, violence, oppression, and poverty, where all women have achieved equality.

Values

Feminism

We are feminists. At Artemis Huron, we value feminism, and our work is grounded in our feminist roots. Through activism, advocacy, and education, we empower our community to challenge systemic oppression and stand for equity. We hold a collective responsibility to create safe and inclusive spaces in which every woman can experience her own agency and stand in her full authority.

Relationships

We stand in relationships. Through relationships, we build trust, allowing us to show up with authenticity and transparency, conditions necessary for deep, sustainable change. We build relationships to affect powerful transformation in individuals, our organizations, and our communities.

Healing

Healing is a life-long journey. At Artemis Huron, healing is trauma-focused and heart-based, encompassing the whole woman. It is a deeply personal, holistic, and embodied experience. As we hold each woman as creative, resourceful, and whole, we affirm her innate ability to recover, move forward, and thrive.

Courage

We have courage. We speak truth to power. We acknowledge the courage required for a community to name inequity and dismantle the power structures that create it, and the courage needed for a woman to both stay in, and leave, an abusive relationship. Our courage is our grit. We are resilient because we are courageous.

Leadership

We are leaders. Leaders take responsibility for their world. We invest in developing leadership in every person in the organization, including those we serve. When a woman trusts her voice, speaks her truth, and stands in her authority, she claims her leadership, unapologetically standing in the fullest expression of who she is.

Land acknowledgement

We acknowledge that the land we are on today is the traditional territories of the Anishinabee, Haudenosaunee, and Neutral peoples. These Nations were stewards of this land long before the arrival of settlers and the encroachment of colonization.

This land is connected to the Dish with One Spoon wampum, an agreement between Nations to share and care for the land and its resources in peace and friendship.

While a land acknowledgement is only one step, it is an important one. It asks us to reflect on the history that brought us here and the responsibilities we carry.

Today, Huron County remains home to Indigenous Peoples from many Nations who continue to care for this land and work towards healing from generations of colonial trauma—a journey of strength, resilience, and restoration that deeply resonates with our work.

We are committed to truth and reconciliation. We honour Indigenous Peoples’ continued stewardship of the land and water, and we recognize the injustices, past and present, that they face. This commitment guides our work with women and families by challenging colonial narratives, removing barriers, and building meaningful relationships.
